CentOS 8 - No updates available
Status of this historical note
Updated 23 October 2026: CentOS Linux 8 reached end of life on 31 December 2021, and CentOS Stream 8 ended on 31 May 2024. Neither is a current destination for restoring security updates. See the CentOS Project’s Linux 8 end-of-life announcement and release lifecycle comparison.
The original 2020 report described a newly installed CentOS 8.1 system returning:
Dependencies resolved.
Nothing to do.
Complete!
That output alone does not identify a fault: it can mean that enabled repositories offer no newer packages. Diagnose the installed distribution and enabled repositories before choosing a remedy.
Inspect before changing repositories
These commands identify the OS and repository configuration without switching distributions:
cat /etc/os-release
dnf repolist --enabled
Compare the repository configuration with the documentation for that exact release. For an end-of-life installation, plan a backed-up, tested migration or rebuild on a supported platform. Access to archived packages does not restore security maintenance.
Why the original workaround is retired
The original post suggested installing centos-release-stream followed by an update. That changes repository configuration toward CentOS Stream; it is not a general repair for a “Nothing to do” result and is not a supported migration plan for systems running today.
The old release note concerned an early Stream installation scenario. It should not have been generalised to all CentOS 8 installations. The commands have been removed from this guide to avoid presenting an obsolete distribution change as routine update troubleshooting.
